The four-day Amazon Prime Day 2026 event (June 23–26) generated a record $26.4 billion in U.S. online sales, up 9.3% year over year, according to Adobe Analytics. But the topline number masks some softness underneath: average order size fell to $47.66 from $53.34, and deal satisfaction slipped to 59% from 68% last year.

Shoppers skewed toward everyday value and wellness items with roughly 69% of items purchased under $20, suggesting a stock-up, essentials-driven event rather than a splurge occasion. Separately, Amazon officially surpassed Walmart as the largest U.S. retailer by gross merchandise volume, now controlling an estimated 47% of U.S. e-commerce.

What this means for suppliers:

  • Consumer behavior during major sales events is shifting toward smaller, value-focused purchases rather than big-ticket splurges worth factoring into promotional planning across any retailer, not just Amazon

  • Amazon's growing e-commerce dominance raises the stakes for maintaining strong Walmart Declining deal satisfaction scores suggest shoppers are getting more discerning, sharper, more credible discounts may outperform broad markdowns
