What Is a GS1-128 Label?
A GS1-128 label is a barcode used on cases and pallets that contains key supply chain data, such as GTIN, lot number, and expiration date. It enables better traceability, accuracy, and visibility throughout the supply chain.
What Changed?
Walmart has expanded its GS1-128 barcode requirements beyond the FDA Food Traceability List (FTL). As of 2025, all food and beverage suppliers are required to include GS1-128 barcodes to support improved traceability.

This update now applies across a broader range of categories, including produce, baby food, pet food, beverages, meat, and poultry.
What This Means for Suppliers
Suppliers must begin incorporating GS1-128 barcodes at the case level and ensure all required data elements are included. These typically include:

-
GTIN (matching the orderable GTIN in Supplier One)
-
Lot or batch code
-
Date code (e.g., pack date, best before, or expiration)
-
Applicable Application Identifiers (AIs)

Barcodes must also meet GS1 and Walmart print quality and placement standards. Additionally, data should align with ASN/SSCC-18 submissions to maintain traceability consistency.
How OCM Can Help
OCM helps suppliers navigate Walmart’s labeling requirements by providing guidance on GS1-128 implementation, ensuring compliance with barcode standards, and supporting alignment across packaging, labeling, and ASN processes.
