What Is an Advanced Shipping Notice?
An Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) is a requirement for suppliers to notify Walmart of what is on an order and when it will arrive for delivery. It is unrealistic for Walmart suppliers to consistently ship 100% in-full shipments on every order, so the ASN serves as a communication device for both parties on opposite sides of the supply chain.
Why Is an Advanced Shipping Notice Important?
An ASN is used to help conduct business faster and with more precision between suppliers and retailers. Much like a receipt that we receive after a purchase on Amazon, the Walmart ASN provides visibility and confidence for the Walmart buyer. It ensures that what was ordered is what is being delivered.

Additionally, an ASN allows Walmart to hold suppliers accountable for shipment accuracy. If there are any discrepancies in the shipment, Walmart can identify and resolve them more quickly. When Walmart knows what is coming into their inventory, it increases the likelihood of getting products onto shelves faster and into customers’ hands.
How Do I Avoid Fines?

Walmart must receive the ASN prior to the shipment arriving at the distribution center (DC)

All lines of the purchase order must be included on the ASN

All items in the shipment must be included on the ASN

The quantity of items shipped must be accurately reflected on the ASN
