Walmart ASN Requirements
(Advanced Shipping Notice)
A Walmart ASN (Advanced Shipping Notice) is an electronic notice sent as an EDI 856 transaction that tells Walmart exactly what’s on an order and when it will arrive, before the shipment reaches the distribution center. It gives Walmart receiving accuracy and gives suppliers a way of documenting what was shipped.

What Is an ASN (Advanced Shipping Notice)?
The ASN is Walmart’s electronic shipment notice. Like a receipt that confirms what’s in a delivery, it lists the PO, items, and quantities so Walmart can verify what it receives against what was ordered.
Why Are ASNs Important for Walmart Suppliers?
An accurate ASN speeds up receiving and reduces errors at the distribution center. It lets Walmart verify shipments against what was ordered, resolve discrepancies faster, and get products to shelves sooner which is why ASN mistakes trigger chargebacks.

What Is EDI 856? (And How It Relates to ASNs)
EDI 856 is the electronic data interchange transaction set that carries the ASN. The SSCC-18 barcode on each carton/pallet (encoded in a GS1-128 label) links the physical shipment to the EDI 856 ASN, enabling automated receiving.
