What's Happening
Walmart published its FY2026 Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Report on July 29, 2026 and the data inside sets a clear expectation for suppliers. The report shows more than 4,300 suppliers reporting progress through Project Gigaton in FY2026, up significantly from previous years, with 6,800 suppliers participating worldwide.
In FY2026 alone, participating suppliers reported 187 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent (MMT CO2e) in expected emissions avoided, reduced, or sequestered. That brings the cumulative total to more than 1.37 billion MT CO2e since 2017, a milestone that already exceeds the original 1-billion-ton goal Walmart set for 2030.
The report also highlights progress on commodity sourcing: 97.3% of supplier-reported South American beef farms in priority regions were verified deforestation- and conversion-free, and 99.9% of private-brand coffee was sourced as certified more sustainable.
What This Means for Suppliers
Walmart's ESG report is not just a corporate communications document, it signals what Walmart will increasingly expect from its supplier base. Key requirements and recognition tiers suppliers should know:
• Project Gigaton portal: Suppliers are required to annually report avoided, reduced, or sequestered emissions (Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3) via Walmart's portal or CDP integration. Non-participation is increasingly conspicuous as the program grows.
• Sparking Change designation: Earned by suppliers who report emissions and begin tracking reductions. This is the entry-level recognition and the minimum threshold serious suppliers should meet.
• Giga Guru designation: Reserved for top performers who report Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, set absolute reduction targets, and disclose renewable energy usage. This status carries reputational value with buyers.
• Sustainable sourcing: If your product uses South American beef, coffee, palm oil, or other flagged commodities, Walmart's buyers will expect documentation of deforestation-free sourcing and certified supply chains.
• Supply chain resilience: Walmart's strategy explicitly includes diversifying suppliers and expanding local/regional sourcing — a signal that suppliers who can demonstrate domestic or near-shore capabilities may have an edge.
